Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is the prime attraction of Dandeli town, located in the Uttara Kannada district of South Indian state of Karnataka. It is also the second largest wildlife sanctuary of the state, which was declared as a Tiger Reserve in the year of 2007.
Situated 485 km from Bangalore, the sanctuary is spread over a huge area of 5729.07 sq km. Set amidst the steep slopes, dotted with lush dense forest and deep river valleys, the sanctuary enhance a cool and calm environment with breathtaking surroundings.
Flora and Fauna: Located in the lap of rich hilly forest terrain, the sanctuary is blessed with rich flora and fauna. Flora: Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary houses a wide range of trees, plants and vegetation. The sanctuary is engraved with numerous bamboo and teak trees all around. Also a number of fruits trees captivate innumerable birds of sanctuary as well as from the neighboring areas.
Fauna: The sanctuary is blessed with several species of animals, birds and reptiles. You may find many exotic and protected species of animals here, such as tigers, mouse deer, flying squirrel, gaur, wild pigs, tigers, wild dogs, leopard, black panther, deer, antelopes, civet cat, spotted deer, jackal, languor, bear, monkeys, slender loris, mongoose etc. Also the sanctuary is home of many rare species as barking deer, sloth bear, Malabar giant squirrel, giant iguana, Indian pangolin etc. Birds: The broad jungle of the sanctuary provides shelter to around 297 species of birds. Golden backed woodpecker, Indian bulbul, magpie robin, Indian hornbill, crested serpent eagle, myna, and many more. Do not get surprised, if you see King cobra and many other varieties of snakes all around the sanctuary.
Adventure at Wildlife: The thick dense forests and steep slopes of the hills around the sanctuary offers an ideal site for trekking. Also you may have the pleasure of adventure sports and rafting in the river Kali. Cycling and mountain biking are some other thrilling adventures of the territory.
