A hybrid car is one that uses both Internal Combustion Engine or ICE and an electric motor for powering the vehicle. There are several types of hybrid cars. Some of the major categories are as follows:
Strong Hybrid Cars
Also know as Full Hybrid, these cars can run on both the electric motor and ICE independently or by using both at the same time.
Mild Hybrid Cars
In these cars the electric motor is not strong enough to drive the car alone. The motor is used to assist the ICE, for regenerative breaking etc. These do not require as powerful a battery or capacitor as used with full hybrid cars and can significantly improve the performance and mileage of the cars without being too pricy. Honda Accord Hybrid is a mild hybrid.
Parallel Hybrid Cars
In parallel Hybrid cars the electric motor is used along with conventional transmission and can be used for regenerative breaking as well as to boost the power of the engine. This means that a smaller, more economic engine can be used without loss in performance and acceleration.
Series Hybrid Cars
In series hybrid cars the conventional transmission is removed. The ICE runs a generator that provides the power for the electric motor running the car. As ICE has optimal power output at only a certain RPM, series hybrid can improve the performance of car.
Plug in Hybrid Cars
In such cars the battery or capacitors can be charged externally as well. They also have an ICE, which is used to provide power and extend the range of the vehicle.
Honda Accord Hybrid is a Parallel hybrid car by Honda. This car makes use of Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist or IMA technology. It uses an electrical motor between transmission and the internal combustion engine. This allows for regenerative breaking and can also used without ICE on slopes or for reducing the deceleration. IMA also allows the engine to be shut down when the car stops and uses the electric motor to spin it back up when driver releases the break, making it very fuel efficient in a city’s stop and go traffic.
The new Honda Accord has a 255 Hp, V6 engine that gives good performance and excellent mileage of about 37 mpg on highway and 29 mpg in cities. Besides the excellent performance and mileage Honda accord also boosts a wide array of external and internal features that makes it a truly world class car.
These features include security system, power window control, power side mirrors, power adjustable and heated front seats, dual zone climate control system, GPS navigation system and telescopic steering column among other things.
